Vol. 572 No. 5

Adjournment Debate. - Job Losses.

71.
Mr. Durkan asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the progress to date in finding alternative employment for the 300 employees at a company (details supplied) in Celbridge, County Kildare, who are to be made redundant in the near future; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [23788/03]
Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment (Ms Harney): In the light of the recent announcement by Schneider Electric of the closure of its plant by February 2004, it is a priority to ensure that everything possible is done to secure new investment and employment for the Celbridge area.
In conjunction with the company, IDA Ireland will market the facility and an updated profile of the facility will be circulated to IDA Ireland's network of overseas offices. Enterprise Ireland is also involved with the company and other development agencies, including the Kildare County Enterprise Board, in identifying enterprise opportunities, as well as working with other agencies to improve the local business infrastructure.
A firm of outplacement consultants has been engaged by Schneider Electric to assist the workers in finding alternative employment. FÁS is also making available to the workers affected its range of services.
