Vol. 572 No. 6

Written Answers. - School Staffing.

Michael Noonan

Ceist:

242 Mr. Noonan asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will sanction the retention of a teacher at a school (details supplied) in County Limerick in which enrolment is one pupil short of the requirement to retain this teacher; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24289/03]

The staffing of a primary school is determined by reference to the enrolment of the school on 30 September of the previous school year. The actual number of mainstream posts sanctioned is determined by reference to a staffing schedule and is finalised for a particular year following discussions with the education partners.

The staffing of the school referred to by the Deputy for the current school year is a principal and nine mainstream class teachers based on an enrolment of 256 pupils on 30 September 2002. The school also has the services of a learning support teacher and a resource teacher.

According to data submitted to my Department by the board of management, the enrolment on 30 September 2003 was 236 pupils. The staffing for the 2004-05 school year will be determined on the basis of this figure in accordance with the agreed staffing schedule which is expected to be notified to boards of management early in 2004.
