Vol. 572 No. 6

Written Answers. - European Railway Agency.

Seán Crowe

Ceist:

319 Mr. Crowe asked the Minister for Transport his views on the establishment of a new European railway agency; and the implications he views that will have for Irish rail networks. [23868/03]

The proposal to establish a European railway agency is one of a package of proposals aimed at revitalising the European railways and building an integrated European railway area, and I support the broad aims of those proposals. The proposed European railway agency will be a technical body, and its primary role will be to advise the European Union on issues relating to safety and interoperability on the EU's railways. The work of the proposed agency should make a positive contribution to the achievement of a more integrated European railway system.
