Vol. 572 No. 6

Written Answers. - International Islands Conference.

Michael D. Higgins

Ceist:

81 Mr. M. Higgins asked the Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs his proposals for the international islands conference to be held in Galway in May 2004; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24048/03]

My Department plans to host a high-level conference at official level during the forthcoming Irish Presidency of the European Union. It will be held in County Galway from 19 to 21 May 2004.

The conference will address issues in regard to future economic and social cohesion policies for specific areas of the European Union that have recognised territorial handicaps, namely, islands, mountainous areas and sparsely populated areas.
As the Deputy will understand, a detailed programme for the conference has yet to be finalised. It is envisaged that, in addition to civil servants from the various EU member states, representatives from the EU institutions and other relevant EU organisations will participate in the conference deliberations.
The role of people from the areas in question in the conference is also being examined. In order to advance preparations for the conference, my officials have already met with officials in the directorate-general for regional policy in the European Commission and a further meeting is due to take place shortly.
The timing of this event for May 2004 means that it will take place after the formal enlargement of the EU on 1 May 2004. In addition, therefore, to the overall objective of making a contribution to furthering strategic consideration by the EU in this important policy area, this conference should provide an occasion on which to celebrate with, and welcome, new members to the European family.
