Vol. 572 No. 6

Written Answers. - Dairy Farming Sector.

Johnny Brady

Ceist:

179 Mr. J. Brady asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the number of dairy farmers participating in the milk recording scheme; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24121/03]

Based on information from the Irish Cattle Breeding Federation, ICBF, there were approximately 6,000 dairy farmers participating in the milk recording scheme in 2002, out of a total of 26,500. This amounts to approximately 23% of all dairy farmers in Ireland.

I am committed to encouraging and assisting the Irish dairy industry to achieve the greatest possible genetic improvement in the national cattle herd for the benefit of both the Irish farmers and the industry generally. There is evidence that greater value can be added to Irish milk by increasing the protein content of raw milk, and in so far as milk recording facilitates this, it is well worthwhile.
