Written Answers. - Departmental Expenditure.

Phil Hogan

Ceist:

90 Mr. Hogan asked the Minister for Social and Family Affairs the amount of money which was spent for the years 2001, 2002 and 2003 to date on public relations, marketing and advertising. [24318/03]

The use of advertising is important in ensuring that citizens are aware of their social welfare entitlements and are notified about improvements and changes affecting their payments and services.

Expenditure on advertising in 2001 was €1,519,053. The main advertising campaigns during 2001 were in respect of the introduction of the euro and also the Budget 2002 payment increases. In 2002, advertising expenditure was €1,319,238. Advertising during 2002 included three information campaigns relating to the promotion of the farm assist scheme among low income farmers; the promotion of awareness of the personal public service number and its use as the key to accessing public services; and the Budget 2003 information campaign.

Advertising expenditure in 2003 to date has amounted to €243,095.06. My Department's expenditure on public relations consultancy in 2002 was €6,534. There was no expenditure of this nature in 2001 or in 2003 to date. There was no expenditure on marketing during the period 2001 to 2003.
