Vol. 573 No. 1

Written Answers. - Departmental Staff.

Paudge Connolly

Ceist:

163 Mr. Connolly asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the number of public service cuts proposed for his Department in 2004; the areas in which such proposed cuts will be effected; if they are likely to be at lower or higher levels; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24507/03]

The Government decided on 1 July 2003, in the context of a decision on overall public service staffing levels, to reduce the staffing complement of the Department of Foreign Affairs, including the Agency for Personal Service Overseas, APSO, by a total of 46 posts over the period 2003 to 2005. Specifically, the Government decision provided for reductions of nine posts in 2003, a further 16 by the end of 2004 and the remaining 21 during 2005. The areas in which the proposed cuts will be effected for 2004 will be considered in July of next year, after the conclusion of the EU Presidency.
