Vol. 573 No. 3

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

Michael Ring

Ceist:

315 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Education and Science when funding will be made available for a sports hall at Davitt College in Castlebar, County Mayo; when this school initially applied for this funding; and the stage the application is at now. [24998/03]

The large scale building project for Davitt College, Castlebar, is listed in section 6 of the 2003 school building programme which is published on my Department's website at www.education.ie. This project is at stage 5, bills of quantities, of architectural planning. It has been assigned a band 3 rating by my Department in accordance with the published criteria for prioritising large scale projects.

Projects listed in section 6 will not be authorised to progress beyond their current stage of architectural planning at this time. Budgetary provisions in 2004 and subsequent years will determine the rate of progression to tender and construction of these projects in conjunction with the band rating individually assigned. Davitt College initially applied for funding for this new sports hall in March 1996.

Charlie O'Connor

Ceist:

316 Mr. O'Connor asked the Minister for Education and Science the actions he is taking to deal with the accommodation needs, including a PE hall, at the Holy Family national school, Ballycragh; if his attention has been drawn to the huge pressure on the school; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24999/03]

The proposed large scale building project for Ballycragh national school is listed in section 7 of the 2003 school building programme which is published on my Department's website at www.education.ie. This proposed project is at an early stage of architectural planning and has been assigned a band 2 rating by my Department in accordance with the published criteria for prioritising large scale projects.

Projects listed in section 7 are not being authorised to progress beyond their current stage of architectural planning for the time being. The timing of when projects listed in these sections can progress to tender and construction will depend on the budgetary allocation for 2004 and subsequent years and the priority afforded to each project by reference to the band rating. In the meantime, individual schools should use their devolved grant to deal with any urgent health and safety works.
