Written Answers. - Physical Education Facilities.

Paul Connaughton

Ceist:

351 Mr. Connaughton asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the necessity of St. Mary's college, Ballygar, County Galway, providing a new hard playing surface adjacent to their secondary school at a total cost of about ?70,000 for health and safety reasons; if his Department will grant aid this project in 2004; if his attention has been further drawn to the importance of this area to the welfare and the well being of the students of St. Mary's college; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [25228/03]

On the basis of the budgetary allocation it was not possible to include funding in 2003 for the provision of a hard play area at St. Mary's college, Ballygar, County Galway.

However, this project is considered to be a small scale project for external works and is currently at pre – tender stage. All small scale projects will be considered again in the context of the 2004 capital programme, available funding and priorities attaching under the current scheme of grants.
