Vol. 573 No. 3

Written Answers. - Health Board Services.

Michael Ring

Ceist:

424 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Health and Children when a person (details supplied) in County Mayo will be called for laser treatment on their eyes. [24784/03]

As the Deputy will be aware, responsibility for the provision of health services in the Mayo area rests with the Western Health Board. My Department has, therefore, asked the chief executive of the board to investigate the matter raised by the Deputy and reply direct to him, as a matter of urgency.

Pat Carey

Ceist:

425 Mr. Carey asked the Minister for Health and Children the position regarding the discussions between the GMS, health board and the chiropodists' representatives regarding the decision by chiropodists to apply a charge of ?10 for services to GMS patients; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24798/03]

Responsibility for the provision of services to medical card holders is, by legislation, a matter for the chief executive officer of the relevant health board-authority. However, the Department is aware of the unilateral decision of chiropodists, in some areas, to levy medical card holders for a service which in the past was provided free of charge, under agreed arrangements between the chiropodists and the health boards/authority. The chief executive officers have been asked to consider the matter in each area and to report to me at an early date.
