Vol. 573 No. 3

Written Answers. - Driving Tests.

Billy Timmins

Ceist:

514 Mr. Timmins asked the Minister for Transport the position in relation to a person (details supplied) in County Wicklow who attended for a driving test in Wicklow on 16 October 2003; if everyone taking a driving test has to have written on their insurance certificate that they can take the test; if, in view of the circumstances, this person can be tested again immediately without paying the test fee again; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [25130/03]

Liz McManus

Ceist:

517 Ms McManus asked the Minister for Transport in view of the experience of a person (details supplied) in County Wicklow, his views on whether this is an unnecessarily bureaucratic and costly requirement; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24860/03]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 514 and 517 together.

I understand that vehicles hired under a hire agreement are not generally insured for the purpose of undertaking a driving test. Accordingly, driving test candidates who intend using a hired vehicle for the purpose of their driving test are requested to submit a note from the hire company to the effect that the vehicle is insured to take a driving test. This requirement was notified to the person concerned in the leaflet Final Checks for your Driving Test which issued with his appointment letter on 8 September 2003. Unfortunately, as he did not comply with the conditions required in order for a driving test to be conducted there is no case for allowing a free retest.

Phil Hogan

Ceist:

515 Mr. Hogan asked the Minister for Transport when a driving test will be made available for a person (details supplied) in County Kilkenny; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [25237/03]

A driving test will be arranged as soon as possible for the person concerned.
