Vol. 573 No. 3

Written Answers. - Closed Circuit Television Systems.

Róisín Shortall

Ceist:

550 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform further to Parliamentary Question No. 216 of 26 March 2003, the progress to date in providing closed circuit television to Finglas village; if he has received the advisory committee's views on the matter; if all structural works have been completed at Finglas Garda station; and the progress on the granting of way leaves and planning permission. [24788/03]

As the Deputy is aware, Finglas is one of 17 locations set to receive new Garda CCTV systems over the next two years subject to the availability of funds. The other locations, in alphabetical order, are: Athlone, Ballyfermot, Bray, Carlow, Castlebar, Clondalkin, Clonmel, Dundalk, Dún Laoghaire, Ennis, Galway, Limerick, Kilkenny, Sligo, Tallaght and Waterford.

The contract for the supply and installation of a CCTV system for Finglas was awarded in 2002. It was intended that the system would consist of nine cameras to be monitored from Finglas Garda station. An offer has been made from statutory and other bodies to fund additional cameras for incorporation into the Finglas scheme. This offer is currently under consideration by the CCTV Advisory Committee which was established by the Garda Commissioner to evaluate applications for CCTV systems. Legal advice has been sought by the committee on this matter. I am disappointed by the fact that little progress has been made in respect of this matter but I am aware that the acceptance of third party cameras is a complex matter. I understand that this issue will be discussed at the next CCTV advisory committee meeting to be held shortly. Upon receipt of the committee's views, I expect to be in a position to decide on this matter.

I am further advised that while the provision of the CCTV monitoring room within the limited confines of Finglas Garda station has proved dif ficult, the Garda authorities and the Office of Public Works are endeavouring to finalise the structural works required to facilitate installation of the CCTV system.
Issues such as the offer of additional cameras and the structural works required at Finglas Garda station must be finalised prior to seeking way-leave permission and the initiation of the planning process in order that any necessary changes to the proposed system can be incorporated in the intervening period of time.
