Vol. 573 No. 3

Written Answers. - Local Government Elections.

Arthur Morgan

Ceist:

639 Mr. Morgan asked the Minister for the Environment Heritage and Local Government if, in advance of the forthcoming local elections, he has reviewed the participation of women in local government; the findings of such a review; the measures he intends to take to encourage the greater participation of women in local government; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24922/03]

At the last local elections, 18% of candidates were women and, at present, women account for approximately 16% of all local authority members. I consider that the termination of the dual mandate at the forthcoming local elections should provide political parties, prospective candidates and the electorate with a particular opportunity to address the low rate of female participation and representation in local government.
