As Minister, I am responsible for the development of a modern and sustainable waste management policy, centred around reducing our current over-reliance on landfill disposal and minimising impact on the environment. My Department has issued two policy documents, Changing Our Ways and Preventing and Recycling Waste – Delivering Change.
I am also responsible for ensuring that a comprehensive and effective modern legislative code is in place to regulate the waste sector, taking particular account of the significant body of European law in this area. Such a code is in place through the Waste Management Acts 1996 to 2003, amended earlier this year through the Protection of the Environment Act 2003, and related regulations.
