The following table gives details of the quantities and costs of paper and envelopes purchased by my Department in 2002, the last period for which figures have been compiled, and the proportion of those paper products that was made from recycled material. Stationery for the Department's headquarters and its Ballina offices is purchased centrally. The vehicle registration unit in Shannon has its own procurement arrangements, and the relevant information is shown separately. Information is also shown separately in respect of Met Éireann and the former Dúchas which were transferred to my Department in 2002.
It is now policy to purchase recycled copier and headed paper in my Department's headquarters, Dublin heritage offices, Ballina office, the vehicle registration unit, VRU, and Met Éireann. It is also policy to purchase recycled envelopes in these offices, except in the case of envelopes used by the VRU to issue motor tax reminders where tests on the use of recycled envelopes with automated mailing equipment proved unsuccessful. However, the VRU are currently seeking to identify other sources of recycled envelopes.
