Vol. 573 No. 3

Written Answers. - Hearing Impairment Claims.

Arthur Morgan

Ceist:

193 Mr. Morgan asked the Minister for Defence if the hearing test known as cortical electrical (evoked) response audiometer is presently being used to evaluate the hearing of current or former members of the Defences Forces; if not, when its use was terminated; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [25114/03]

Keenness of hearing in the Defence Forces is normally and routinely measured by patient response pure tone audiometry. In exceptional circumstances, where the patient response may not be reliable or on the recommendation of the ENT specialist to the Defence Forces, the patient may be referred for cortical evoked response audiometry, CERA.

In addition, my Department from time to time instructs the Office of the Chief State Solicitor to arrange for a CERA test in order to clarify the level of hearing acuity in some claimants alleging hearing impairment.

Question No. 194 answered with Question No. 150.
