There are currently 13 classes in national schools and three pre-school classes for children with autistic spectrum disorders, ASD, on the northside of Dublin. The details are set out in the table which I propose to circulate in the Official Report.
The particular facility referred to by the Deputy is not recognised as a national school by my Department. It was set up as a pilot project in November 2001 to cater for 12 children with ASD. It now caters for 24 children. The facility has a staff of one director, one supervisor, 25 tutors and one secretary. My Department provides funding for the facility, which amounted to €887,300 for the 2002-03 year.
A decision on the future of this facility will be made in light of an evaluation of provision for children with ASD currently being carried out by my Department's inspectorate. The evaluation will also include educational services for children with ASD being provided in other settings such as special schools, special classes and mainstream schools. It is envisaged that the outcome of the evaluation will be determined before the end of school year 2003-04.
