The number of cases of Johne's disease reported to my Department has increased significantly in recent years. In the 50 year period up to 1982, a total of 92 animals were diagnosed with the disease whereas in 2002 alone 100 animals in 34 herds were diagnosed as having Johne's disease. My Department is currently finalising a review of both policy and practice in relation to Johne's disease with a view to establishing a new approach to the disease. Details requested in respect of the locations in which compensation has been paid in the past two years are included in the tabular statement which I propose to circulate in the Official Report. In 2002, the largest compensatory payment made was for €422,000 in respect of the depopulation of a single herd in County Cork comprising of 202 animals. The lowest amount of compensation paid was €127.54 for an animal, also in a herd in County Cork. In 2003, to date, the largest compensatory amount paid was €21,398.03 in respect of nine animals in a herd in County Louth. The lowest amount of compensation paid was €37.56 for an animal in a herd in County Mayo.
