Brian O'Shea

Ceist:

133 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food his views on whether the move to full decoupling will precipitate a fall in the price of Irish meat; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [25580/03]

The FAPRI-Ireland report on the effects of full decoupling predicts that, after an initial drop in cattle prices in 2005 due to increased slaughtering, the trend will be reversed from 2007 onwards and an overall price increase of 10% is predicted for cattle prices in Ireland by 2012. Similarly, Irish sheep prices are predicted to increase by 13% by 2012. The report indicates that there may be marginal increases in pigmeat prices due to the cross price effect of higher beef and sheepmeat prices.
