Written Answers. - Library Projects.

Dan Boyle

Ceist:

192 Mr. Boyle asked the Minister for the Environment Heritage and Local Government the situation regarding the provision of library facilities in the Mahon and Bishopstown-Wilton areas of Cork City. [26020/03]

My Department is awaiting the submission of a revised stage 1 or approval in principle proposal from Cork City Council for a branch library at Bishopstown on a site other than that originally proposed.

A proposal for a community library at Mahon has been suggested under the RAPID programme and the city council is examining site options.

Ceist:

193 Mr. Boyle asked the Minister for the Environment Heritage and Local Government the guidelines which exist in relation to the size of library facilities, vis-à-vis, the population areas they are meant to service. [26021/03]

A minimum urban population of 1,000 is required for a library proposal to be considered for funding under the library capital programme.

In relation to library size and population served, each proposal is considered on its merits. Factors taken into account are the needs of the population served, the range of services to be provided, proximity to other public library branches and cultural services, and availability of resources.
