Vol. 573 No. 5

Written Answers. - Company Closures.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

87 Mr. Durkan asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment her proposals to encourage reinvestment in Celbridge, County Kildare with the objective of replacing the job losses arising from the closure of a company (details supplied); and if she will make a statement on the matter. [25958/03]

In light of the recent announcement by Schneider Electric of the closure of its plant by February 2004, it is a priority to ensure that everything possible is done to secure new investment and employment for the Celbridge area. In conjunction with the company, IDA Ireland is marketing the facility with a view to attracting a replacement project. Enterprise Ireland is also involved with the company and other development agencies, including the Kildare County Enterprise Board, in identifying enterprise opportunities, as well as working with other agencies to improve the local business infrastructure. A firm of outplacement consultants has been engaged by Schneider Electric to assist the workers in finding alternative employment. FÁS is continuing to provide assistance to the workers affected.
