Vol. 574 No. 1

Written Answers. - Overseas Development Aid.

Charlie O'Connor

Ceist:

261 Mr. O'Connor asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the position regarding plans to cover the work in African countries previously covered by APSO; if his attention has been drawn to the interest in these matters; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [26549/03]

The report of the Ireland Aid Review Committee in 2002 recommended that APSO, the Agency for Personal Service Overseas, be integrated into what is today Development Co-operation Ireland on a carefully phased basis which would safeguard APSO's distinct role and value.

The Government accepted this recommendation. The process of integration is currently under way and it is expected that this will be completed shortly. Activities which APSO has so effectively delivered and overseen will continue to be supported by development co-operation Ireland following integration. This will include the significantly increased support which has been provided in 2003 to Irish missionary organisations as well as development personnel working with Irish NGOs. Support continues to be provided by Development Co-operation Ireland to ongoing development activities in numerous parts of Africa and in more than 75 countries worldwide.
APSO has played an important role in helping provide opportunities for Irish people to assist in development work overseas. The spirit of volunteerism which it has nurtured in this country has made a huge contribution to the fight against poverty in the developing world. I will be taking an initiative shortly to provide continuing guidance and support for voluntary service by Irish people in developing countries.
