Vol. 574 No. 1

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

Seán Haughey

Ceist:

285 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Education and Science the progress made to date regarding the establishment of an autistic unit in St. David's CBS secondary school, Artane, Dublin 5, to cater in September 2004 for the primary school children currently attending Scoil Chiara, Donnycarney, Dublin 5; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [26240/03]

My Department is not aware of any specific proposal from St. David's CBS secondary school, Artane, for the establishment of a special unit to cater for students with autism at the school. Any such proposal will be given full consideration. However, my Department is actively engaged in pursuing the development of such a unit in another second level school in the area in question. In the event that this development proceeds, the proposed unit would be capable of catering for children from the primary school to which the Deputy refers.
