Vol. 574 No. 1

Written Answers. - Departmental Staff.

Pat Carey

Ceist:

492 Mr. Carey asked the Minister for the Environment Heritage and Local Government if his Department, in appointing tour guides to heritage sites, has placed an upper age limit of 65 years on applicants; his views on whether this breaches current employment legislation; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [26247/03]

The standard upper retirement age for civil servants is age 65, as a consequence of which it is not possible to recruit guide-information officers who exceed this threshold. This is consistent with current legislation.

Certain non-established civil service employees, of whom the grade of guide-information officer is one, may, however, be retained to age 66, although they must be recruited before reaching the age of 65.
