Vol. 574 No. 1

Written Answers. - Motor Taxation.

Eamon Gilmore

Ceist:

498 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for the Environment Heritage and Local Government if consideration has been given to enabling people to take out and renew motor tax through the post offices; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [26474/03]

Under existing arrangements, motor tax may be renewed either by attending a motor tax office in person or by free post.

A new system which will enable motor tax to be renewed over the Internet will be piloted in three counties next month and it is envisaged that the system will be rolled out nationally early next year. The new system will not only significantly widen access points for people to transact motor tax renewals but will also facilitate the transaction of this business at a time that suits individuals. I am also examining the possibility of developing a facility to allow motorists to renew their motor tax by telephone.

In the circumstances, it is not proposed to involve a further layer of outlets, such as post offices, in the frontline delivery of motor tax services.
