Ceist:170 Mr. Costello asked the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources when a replacement will be appointed to chair the Commission for Communications Regulation following the resignation of the former chair; the method of selection to be used; and if he will make a statement on the matter. I propose to take Questions Nos. 165 and 170 together.
The term of the existing chairperson expires on 30 November 2003. In accordance with section 16 of the Communications Regulation Act 2002, the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources is responsible for the selection of a new chairperson from among the existing commissioners.
I expect to be in a position to make an appointment within the next few weeks and, in making this appointment, I intend to ensure that the Commission for Communications Regulation continues to play a vital role in the promotion of vibrant telecommunication and postal sectors.
