Vol. 574 No. 1

Written Answers. - Marine Safety.

John Deasy

Ceist:

167 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources his plans to introduce a new registration system for recreational boats; and the timescale in this regard. [26374/03]

The maritime safety directorate of my Department is developing a registration system to enhance the safety of recreational craft. This new system will form part of an overhaul of the vessel registration process generally by the directorate, which will put safety at the centre of the process. It is proposed that recreational craft would fall into two categories for registration purposes, a small craft register or full registration, depending on length, tonnage and speed.

The registration system, which I expect to be introduced in 2004, will initially be on a voluntary basis to facilitate the introduction of the scheme, but it is my intention that the system will in time be put on a statutory basis.

I believe the introduction of a registration system for recreational craft is very important as it will enable the application of the safety code of practice for recreational craft currently being finalised by the directorate, to be applied.
