Vol. 574 No. 1

Written Answers. - Broadcasting Legislation.

Jan O'Sullivan

Ceist:

191 Ms O'Sullivan asked the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources the nature of the proposal he is considering to allow the State to claim a portion of the sale price whereby broadcasters licensed by the State sell on to third parties; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [26274/03]

The licensing of radio services in Ireland is currently under review. That review will examine many issues relating to both the policy objectives to be achieved and the processes through which licences are awarded.

One of the issues which the review will consider is how Ireland makes the best use of the scarce resource of radio spectrum. This is a resource that belongs to the people of Ireland. The review will consider future policy options for radio licensing, including pricing of access to spectrum for radio services and competition formats.
