Vol. 574 No. 2

Written Answers. - Grind Schools.

Joe Sherlock

Ceist:

128 Mr. Sherlock asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the concern expressed at the recent conference of the National Association of Principals and Deputy Principals regarding the proliferation of grind schools; if he shares the concerns expressed by the association; the steps he intends to take to address the concerns raised by the association; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [26513/03]

Minister for Education and Science (Mr. Dempsey)

I am aware that the President of the National Association of Principals and Deputy Principals made reference to the issue raised by the Deputy in the course of his address to the association's annual conference held in recent weeks. The schools in question operate as private entities and do not receive funding from my Department. I acknowledge and respect the right of parents to make choices for their children as regards their education.

I support the concept of a broadly based and holistic education with the aim of developing all aspects of the individual, including aesthetic, creative, critical, cultural, emotional, intellectual, moral, physical, political, social and spiritual development to the greatest possible extent.
