Vol. 574 No. 3

Written Answers. - Teachers' Remuneration.

Dan Boyle

Ceist:

184 Mr. Boyle asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of teachers at primary and secondary level whose teaching experience is limited to a maximum of seven years, as a result of training and experience gained outside the country, as specified in Department circular 10/01, detailing the countries in which such training and experience was gained. [27042/03]

The circular to which the Deputy refers reflected agreement reached at the teachers' conciliation council in relation to revised arrangements for the award of incremental credit in respect of approved teaching service given within the member states of the EU. Under this agreement, which became effective on 1 September 2000, incremental credit may be awarded in respect of all recognised teaching service given by qualified teachers in an EU state. The earliest date from which incremental credit will be awarded under the new agreement is 1 September 1994 or the date of appointment of the teacher whichever is the later. Arising from this agreement, teachers who had previously been awarded incremental credits up to a maximum of seven years, are entitled to apply for incremental credit in respect of any such service in excess of the original seven years allowed, subject to the limitation referred to. A total of 23 such cases have arisen to date and the necessary awards have been made. Details of the specific countries in which such training and experience was gained are not readily available in my Department.
