Vol. 575 No. 4

Requests to move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 31.

Before coming to the Order of Business, I propose to deal with a number of notices under Standing Order 31. I will call on the Deputies to raise the matters in the order in which they submitted their notices to my office.

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to debate a matter of great national importance, namely, the terrible hardship experienced due to continuing stealth taxes and, particularly, the hardship experienced by those poor families with children who do not have medical cards. They cannot afford GP and pharmacy charges due to the failure of the Government to provide them with medical cards as promised.

I ask for this House to be adjourned to debate an issue of national importance, namely, the need to reconsider the community and JI scheme cutbacks in light of 40 Fianna Fáil backbenchers calling for the reinstatement of community employment scheme jobs and given the problems it is causing in areas such as south-west and north Clondalkin and the rest of the country. The House must discuss whether this backbench petition signals disarray within the Government and whether we should debate a confidence motion in the Government—

Deputy Gogarty has gone beyond what was submitted to my office, which is not appropriate. I call on Deputy Connolly.

Fianna Fáil voted on the matter last week.

I seek the adjournment of Dáil Éireann under Standing Order 31 to discuss an issue of urgent national importance, namely, the proposed increases in local authority levies by up to 300%, thereby increasing the cost of a new house by 5%.

I request that Dáil Éireann be adjourned under Standing Order 31 to debate an urgent national matter, namely, the impending crisis in the Irish Prisons Service, to focus on the means to avert a collapse of the prison system and the need for an intermediary to pursue a resolution to the dispute.

Having considered the matters raised, they are not in order in accordance with Standing Order 31.
