Vol. 575 No. 5

Written Answers. - Driving Tests.

Ruairí Quinn

Ceist:

150 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for Transport the number of people who hold a provisional driving licence; the number of people who have had one, two, three four and more than four driving tests and failed; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [28663/03]

The Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, which holds and administers the national driver file, has advised me that the number of provisional licence holders was 358,845 as at 10 April 2003.

Detailed statistics relating to the number of persons who pass a driving test following a second or subsequent test are not compiled. The following table sets out the available information for 2002:

No. of Applicants taking a Driving Test for the first time in 2002

No. who passed on first attempt

No. of Applicants taking a second or subsequent Driving Test in 2002

No. who passed on a second or subsequent attempt

77,712

40,485 (52.1%)

71,271

40,386 (56.7%)
