Vol. 575 No. 5

Requests to move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 31.

Before coming to the Order of Business, I propose to deal with a number of notices under Standing Order 31. I will call on the Deputies in the order in which they submitted notices to my office.

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to debate the following urgent matter: the serious implications for employment and the economy in the Cork area of the announcement by Dairygold Co-operative Society that it is to make 500 workers redundant before Christmas, and the need for the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment to outline the action she intends to take to avert such a major loss of employment.

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to debate, preferably in the presence of the Tánaiste, the following urgent matter: the link between cutbacks in community employment and JI schemes and increasing anti-social behaviour, drug abuse and related crime in areas such as south-west Clondalkin, north Clondalkin and nationwide, which contributes to social breakdown and costs the State more money in the long term.

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to debate the following urgent matter: the shocking decision by Dairygold Co-operative Society to sack 500 workers, the alleged reasons for the sackings, where the substantial profits made previously by these workers have been deployed, and the need to reverse this decision and preserve the livelihoods of the workers.

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to debate the following urgent matter: the decision by the Minister for Social and Family Affairs to abolish the rent supplement, thereby condemning women suffering from domestic violence to continue to live in violent situations and to ask the Minister to make a statement reversing this decision.

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to debate the following urgent matter: the concerns expressed by the Attorney General that half of the hospital waiting list initiative funds of €246 million have been used to finance normal staffing levels in hospitals.

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to debate the following urgent matter: in light of the severe cuts to crèches in disadvantaged areas and the onerous restrictions on the payment of rent supplement, that this House requests the Minister for Social and Family Affairs to change her mind on these appalling backward steps that will impact most on the less well-off in society and to ask the Minister if she will be visiting disadvantaged areas to talk to those affected such as 15 and 16 year old women and their children.

It is not appropriate to go beyond the notice submitted to my office. I suggest the Deputy reads Standing Order 31.

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to debate the following urgent matter: to ask the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment and the Minister for Agriculture and Food to make statements to this House on the announcement by the Dairygold Co-operative Society of 500 job losses, indicating what the Government's response to this serious development will be.

Having considered the matters fully, I do not consider them to be contemplated by Standing Order 31 and therefore I cannot grant leave to move the motions.
