Vol. 576 No. 1

Written Answers. - Environmental Pollution.

Joe Costello

Ceist:

214 Mr. Costello asked the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources if he has satisfied himself with the approach being taken by Sligo County Council in dealing with the clean up of the heavy metal contamination in Ballysadare Bay following their meeting with officials from the Department; his plans to initiate legal proceedings under legislation available to him to prosecute those responsible for the damage done to the Bay; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [29188/03]

As I indicated in my reply to the Deputy's Question No. 253 of 18 November 2003, it is primarily a matter for Sligo County Council, as the responsible local authority, to consider what action is required in respect of the situation at Ballysadare Bay, as the elevated metals levels arise from land based activity. Officials from the Department will, however, continue to monitor the situation.
