238 Ms O. Mitchell asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if the US Government permits a US citizen to hold both a US and an Irish passport simultaneously; and if the Government permits the holding of both passports. [31233/03]
Irish law does not prohibit an Irish citizen from applying for a passport of another state if she or he is eligible to do so. Similarly, Irish law does not require that a person give up any other passport held when acquiring an Irish passport.
The policies of other states regarding their citizens also holding Irish passports are matters for those states. In the case of the United States, its embassy would be the appropriate authority to advise on the present situation. In this general regard, it is advisable that if an Irish citizen is contemplating applying for a passport of another state she or he should consult fully with the authorities of the other jurisdiction before proceeding with their application in order to clarify fully the position regarding the simultaneous holding of two passports.
