Vol. 577 No. 3

Written Answers. - Road Network.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

475 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Transport if, in the context of negotiations between landowners and Kildare County Council in respect of new and proposed road alignments from M4 to Edenderry, he will transfer responsibility for land acquisition to the NRA to allow for consistency in respect of land acquisition and resolution of outstanding issues; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [30718/03]

As the Deputy will be aware the planning, design and implementation of the national roads programme is a matter for the National Roads Authority, NRA. However, I understand, that the road from the M4 to Edenderry is a regional route, R104, and does not come under the remit of the NRA. A comprehensive review of the national and regional road system was concluded in 1994 with the Roads Act 1993 (Declaration of National Roads) Order 1994 and the Roads Act 1993 (Declaration of Regional Roads) Order 1994. This review was carried out in consultation with local authorities and took account of representations received from a wide range of local interests.

The need for changes to be made in the classification of roads in the national or regional network is being kept under review, including in the context of the national spatial strategy however there are no plans to reclassify the R104 at this time.
