Vol. 577 No. 3

Written Answers. - Waste Management.

Fergus O'Dowd

Ceist:

534 Mr. O'Dowd asked the Minister for the Environment Heritage and Local Government his views on the research report of a company (details supplied) which reported on adverse pregnancy outcomes around incinerators and crematoriums in Cumbria, north west England, between 1956-1993, in particular the finding that there was a significantly increased risk of lethal congenital anomaly, specifically spina bifida and heart defects, in relation to proximity to incinerators; and if he will make a statement on the danger incinerators pose to health and the implications these findings have for the Government's incinerator policy. [31125/03]

My Department is involved in detailed discussions with the Department of Health and Children and the Environmental Protection Agency about the report of the Health Research Board on the health and environmental effects of landfilling and incineration of waste. As I have indicated previously, the research report referred to falls to be considered in that context. I hope the discussions to be concluded shortly and I will make a more detailed statement on the matter as soon as possible thereafter.
