Vol. 577 No. 3

Written Answers. - Departmental Staff.

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin

Ceist:

126 Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin asked the Taoiseach the requirements which now apply regarding Irish language competency when recruiting staff for the Office of the Attorney General. [30904/03]

Responsibility for translation into Irish of Acts of the Oireachtas enacted in English only rests with the Houses of the Oireachtas. No special requirements apply regarding Irish language competency when recruiting staff for the Office of the Attorney General. The office is committed to encouraging the development of skills and proficiencies in the Irish language within the office and to supporting and participating in Civil Service Irish language training initiatives. The office has very recently agreed a language training policy which gives the Irish language a very high priority. It is intended to introduce the policy with effect from January, 2004.
