Bruton asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment her views on the contention of the Institute for Management Development survey that Ireland has a weak performance in the matter of competition legislation to prevent unfair competition; and if she will make a statement on the matter. I understand that Ireland was ranked 12th out of 29 countries, having populations of less than 20 million, on the basis of opinion survey research carried out by IMD in relation to competition legislation. That puts us in the top half of those countries and I would not describe that as a weak performance.
Nevertheless, I am somewhat surprised that we do not rank higher and this may reflect the fact that our Competition Act 2002, which is among the most up-to-date and modern in the world, is of very recent origin. I look forward to seeing our ratings in relation to this area in future years.
