Vol. 644 No. 4

Requests to move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 32.

Before coming to the Order of Business, I propose to deal with a number of notices under Standing Order 32 and will call on Deputies in the order in which they submitted their notice to my office. I call Deputy Ó Snodaigh.

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 32 to discuss the following matter of urgent national importance, namely, that the lack of appropriate housing and poor housing standards will detrimentally affect thousands of people across the State this Christmas, including 5,000 people who are homeless, more than 43,000 who remain on the social housing list, the recent revelation by the Simon Community that 55 people who used its services in 2006 have since died and that 44% of excess winter deaths are associated with poor housing standards further demonstrates the extent to which a lack of appropriate housing costs lives and demonstrates why the Government needs to take action now and make required funding available to ensure everyone has access to appropriate housing as is their right.

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 32 to discuss a matter of urgent national importance, namely, in light of the fact that schools have gone to significant expense to submit applications under the summer works scheme 2008 and noting that many of the works which are required must be carried out next summer to comply with health and safety standards, there is an urgent need for the Government to complete a further U-turn on this issue and reinstate the scheme for 2008.

Having considered the matters raised they are not in order under Standing Order 32.
