Vol. 660 No. 1

Public Appointments Transparency Bill 2008: First Stage.

I move:

That leave be granted to introduce a Bill entitled an Act to provide for reform of the appointment processes of persons to the boards of statutory agencies; to provide for Oireachtas supervision of the appointment of ministerial nominees to the position of new members or the re-appointment of existing members to the boards of statutory agencies; to provide for the overseeing of and confirmation by resolution of Dáil Éireann of the appointment of ministerial nominees to the position of chief executive and board chairperson of statutory agencies; to uphold the probity of the appointment process, and to provide for related matters.

Is the Bill opposed?

Question put and agreed to.

Since this is a Private Members' Bill, Second Stage must, under Standing Orders, be taken in Private Members' time.

I move: "That the Bill be taken in Private Members' time."

Question put and agreed to.

It should be noted that more legislation is being introduced from this side of the House than from the Government side.

Will the Tánaiste send the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform, Deputy Dermot Ahern, out to character assassinate the publishers of these Bills next? Is this going to be a regular performance?

I would not go there.

The Cowen-in-chief of the Government.
