JOINT COMMITTEE ON EUROPEAN SCRUTINY díospóireacht -
Tuesday, 20 Nov 2007

Business of Joint Committee.

Is consideration being given to the preparation of an intranet site for the management of documents dealt with by this committee? Such a system might allow members to access the information in the documents.

Would members prefer to receive the documents electronically rather than on paper?

It would be helpful to have both. Outside help might be needed in developing such a system. It would be a good way to reference documents at a later stage. While it is useful to have the documentation when attending a meeting, it would be helpful if the committee could develop an intranet which would provide us with access to previous documents.

That is a good point. Is the proposal agreed? Agreed.

If the documentation is to be made available by the intranet it would be helpful if members had access to computers in the committee rooms.

That is a good point. As the documentation will be on the system, it will only be a matter of it being linked in a user-friendly manner. I do not wish to put an extra burden on the staff but such a facility could help to ease that burden.

We will examine the possibility of having the information available via computers in the committee rooms.

The facility is available already in one of the committee rooms.

It is proposed that the next meeting will take place on 4 December to allow consideration of the issue by the secretariat. The committee secretariat will communicate with Deputy Connick on the issue raised by him.

I raised the matter with the Joint Committee on Justice, Equality, Defence and Women's Rights. That is where the problem lies.

Perhaps we can discuss it further on 4 December.

Members of the Joint Committee on European Affairs will be on a parliamentary trip to Brussels on that day. If I remember correctly, that trip takes place on 3 and 4 December.

That is a good point.

We could have our meeting in Brussels and combine the two.

The secretariat will examine the matter and we will convene a meeting prior to that date. I thank members for attending today's meeting.

The joint committee adjourned at 1.50 p.m. sine die.
