JOINT COMMITTEE ON FOREIGN AFFAIRS díospóireacht -
Tuesday, 27 Jun 2006

Business of Joint Committee.

We received a communication from Senator Norris objecting to the time of the meeting. He was only just able to be here for the commencement of proceedings.

Without me, the meeting would not have a quorum. As I have an important matter to raise on the Order of Business in the Seanad, I will be obliged to leave.

If members agree, Senator Norris may contribute before he leaves or he may wait to do so until he returns.

I would prefer to hear what Mr. Hyland has to say.

The problem we face is that it is difficult to get a suitable time slot for our meetings.

I understand that, but I want to encourage the Chairman to exert as much pressure as possible. I do not suggest that there is anything sinister in the timing of the meeting. It is unfortunate, however, that Senators who are members of the committee are punished in this way.

We should, therefore, proceed as quickly as possible.

I will also be obliged to leave during the meeting.

I ask members to ensure that their mobile phones are switched off completely for the duration of the meeting because they cause interference — even when on silent mode — to the recording equipment. I ask members to respect this instruction and ensure that their phones are switched off.

The minutes of the meeting of 20 June have been circulated. Are they agreed? Agreed. Are there any matters arising?

As far as I can recall, I was present at that meeting.

We will check that.
