JOINT COMMITTEE ON FOREIGN AFFAIRS díospóireacht -
Thursday, 3 Jun 2010

Business of Joint Committee.

I remind members and those in the Visitors' Gallery to ensure that their mobile phones are switched off completely for the duration of the meeting as they cause interference with the recording equipment of the committee rooms.

The minutes of the meeting on 26 May have been circulated. Are there any matters arising?

The last item deals with the list of letters received. I am sure we all welcome the resolution involving the two gay men in Malawi as a result of international governmental pressure. I hope this pressure will be sustained until the legislation is altered there.

Mr. Ezra Yitzhak Nawi is in jail at the moment. It is his birthday today. He will be in for a few days, but he is well. He has been in contact with me and he appreciates the support of this committee.

It was raised at the last meeting and the sub-committee on human rights agreed to take it on.

The former Israeli ambassador to the UN undertook to send on certain information to the members of the committee about roadblocks and the Israeli version of the killing of three children during Operation Cast Lead.

We reported on that at the last meeting. We wrote to him but we have not got anything back yet.

I just wanted to check whether he had come back to us yet.

No, it is too soon.

I suggest that we might prompt him by writing to him again.

We will do that. Are the minutes agreed? Agreed.
