JOINT COMMITTEE ON HEALTH AND CHILDREN díospóireacht -
Tuesday, 30 Sep 2008

Business of Joint Committee.

I thank the Minister of State for being very clear. I do not agree with his decision, and I have one last thing to ask him. If he had a clean sheet and money in the bank, would this be the place he would put the Central Mental Hospital?

The Minister has concluded and we are moving on to the motion.

I shall let him dwell on it.

We move on to the motion concerning the serious misdiagnoses at Ennis General Hospital. I tabled a motion seeking an independent inquiry to which the Minister acceded. Arising from that, we need a patient safety authority, but that is not the substantive nature of the motion I proposed. From a technical perspective, I wish to suspend taking the motion rather than withdrawing it until we see the terms of reference and ensure that those involved — consumer groups and the families, in particular — are happy with them.

The Deputy is not moving the motion and I take it, then, that the amendment will not be moved, as a result. The motion and amendment are duly noted, therefore.

This meeting is now adjourned until 7 October at 3 p.m., when we will meet with representatives of the Irish Association of Psychologists and Mental Health.

The joint committee adjourned at 1.45 p.m. until 3 p.m. on Tuesday, 7 October 2008.
