Frequency of Meetings

At this point we can start our meeting. This is the second public meeting of the Sub-Committee of the Joint Committee on Legislation on the Bankruptcy Bill. The first item on the agenda is the question of the frequency of meetings. It is the general view of all members of the sub-committee that now that we have started this overdue work, we should try to meet once a week to get the Bill finished as quickly as possible. Is that agreed?

I am scheduled for three meetings at 4 o'clock today so it just is not possible. We managed to get one of them put back to 5 o'clock and the second one is on here. Barring the situation that there are overlaps of very closely related meetings I have no objection to moving through the Bill as quickly as possible. It is quite possible that one of the meetings that I am involved in will be finalised in a couple of weeks if we work very hard. Perhaps the chairman could communicate with the Committee on Marriage Breakdown in particular and then with the other committees to try to ensure as far as possible that committee meetings do not clash.

Would 2.30 p.m. on Wednesday be a reasonable time to meet if the Minister is not taking questions? It would probably give us reasonable time.

2.30 p.m. is probably a bad time. Even 3 o'clock might be a better time because Question Time starts with questions to the Taoiseach's period. Quite often we may have an interest in that part of Question Time — the first 10 to 15 minutes — so perhaps 3 o'clock might be more suitable.

Maybe we could make it 2.45 p.m. It is the only way we will get through business, if we have a definite time. We will meet as far as possible on Wednesdays at 2.45 p.m. to 3 o'clock.

Agreed.
