Joint Committee on the Secondary Legislation of the European Communities díospóireacht -
Wednesday, 25 Jun 1980

Consumer Credit.

The first item on our agenda is consideration of Senator Mulcahy's Draft Report on Consumer Credit. It covers admirably the side of the affair that is the concern of Senator Mulcahy's Economic, Commercial and Financial Affairs Sub-Committee. It was not examined by the Committees on Statutory Instruments and on Legal Affairs. However, it has quite an important legal affairs aspect. I am asking the Joint Committee to refer this to a joint meeting of the two Sub-Committees. Their Chairmen, Senator Mulcahy and Senator Molony, might arrange a meeting as soon as that can conveniently be organised. When we have the comments of the Legal Affairs Sub-Committee together with the comments of the Economic and Financial Affairs Sub-Committee, the Joint Committee can then consider it. Would that seem all right?

I would like to support the Chairman on that. This piece of consumer legislation will be very important. It is part of the whole package of consumer legislation that we are dealing with in the House as well as in this Joint Committee. I know from the Sub-Committee that a number of Senators and Deputies are quite worried and concerned about information that is presented in relation to contracts for credit and arrangements for credit. I would like to support the Chairman's view that the two Sub-Committees should jointly consider it to make sure we have dealt with the possible legal implications of some of the items covered.

Agreed.
