Business of Joint Committee

Before I welcome the executives of the NRA, I would like to take this opportunity to pay tribute to our Vice Chairman, Deputy Paul Connaughton, who has announced that he will not be going forward for the next Dáil. As a fellow Galway man, I have always found Deputy Connaughton one of the most likeable and reasonable people I have met in politics. To be able to say that about anyone who has spent approximately 30 years involved is the best tribute one could pay. He has always been very co-operative with me as a member of this committee and I thank him for that. Members who have been here for the past two and a half years will agree that every time he speaks he brings great common sense to the debate. When he starts to talk, the committee clerk and I often say "Here comes Mr. Common Sense". He has brought a direct and common sense approach to our debates. I commend him and wish him a long and enjoyable retirement. I hope his son replaces him, because Deputy Connaughton deserves that.

We would all like to be associated with those remarks. Deputy Connaughton is a perfect gentleman.

It is a pity we are not in the constituency when the Chairman is making these remarks. I thank everybody. It has been a pleasure.
