Vol. 8 No. 18

ORDER OF BUSINESS.

CATHAOIRLEACH

I think, perhaps, it might convenience the Senators if I informed them that I propose to adjourn to-day, assuming that we conclude the business before us, and I propose to ask the House to meet again on next Thursday week, 21st April. The Dáil has adjourned until Wednesday, 20th April. I propose to ask the Seanad to meet on the following day. That will be the Thursday of Easter Week. The business that will then be available will be:—

The Second Stage of the Local Elections (Dissolved Authorities) Bill; the Second Stage of the Land Bill; the Second Stage of the Barrow Drainage Bill; the Committee Stage of the Liquor Bill; the Report Stage of the Juries Bill, that is assuming that we conclude the Committee Stage to-day; the Constitution (Amendment No. 5) Bill to be considered on Report; the Report Stage of the Industrial and Commercial Property Bill; and the Fifth Stage of the Army Pensions (No. 2) Bill. Of course, we are not likely to get through all that business on the Thursday, and probably it will be necessary for the Seanad to sit on the Friday after; and in the following weeks up to the end of our session I think that we will probably be kept pretty busy.

I would ask that two important Bills be not taken on the same day, under any circumstances.

CATHAOIRLEACH

I do not think that would be likely. I will arrange for that as far as possible. I think we can arrange to have one important Bill on Thursday and the other important Bill on Friday.

I would like to suggest that when the Seanad meets on Friday it would recognise the rule that we should meet at 12 o'clock.

CATHAOIRLEACH

That would be a matter for a change in the Standing Orders.

I will give notice on that matter.

CATHAOIRLEACH

That can be brought up at the next meeting of the Committee on Procedure.

I think if the Seanad is to make an order like that, that we should have long notice, and a full debate on it. This mere alteration to-day has upset a great deal of business.

CATHAOIRLEACH

That was the reason I said we could not do a thing of that kind off-hand. It would first of all have to be considered by the Procedure Committee and then it would come up before the House on their Report.
