Vol. 18 No. 6

Late King of the Belgians.

I move:—

"That Seanad Eireann desires to place on record the expression of its deep regret at the tragic death of the King of the Belgians, and to convey to His Royal Highness the Duke of Brabant, heir to the throne of Belgium, the profound sympathy of the House with Her Majesty the Queen of the Belgians and the Royal Family, and with the Government and people of Belgium."

I second the motion. I am privileged to do so because King Albert lost his life mountaineering, which is my favourite sport. Apart from public admiration for a celebrated man, I think it is fitting that we should pass this resolution, because King Albert was one of the finest examples of public men in our time. He was a patriot King, one who shared the tribulations of his people. He was adored by his own country, not because he put himself at the head of any movement of national ambition or anything of that kind, but because he always put duty first, with all the unpretentiousness of true greatness.

Cathaoirleach

I ask the House to pass this motion.

The motion was passed; Senators rising in their places.
